Douro Valley is located about an hour and a half away from Porto (in the northern side), is the drive worth it? you bet it is! I was lucky enough to find a very special someone who was willing to take the drive with me and show me this beautiful site.
In order to see of all of it’s beauty, you must drive all the way to the top of the Valley, once up there you will understand what I’m talking about. Once you reach the top, you will be awe by the Douro River, how it cuts between the lands , full of vineyards , green pastures and mountains. A place that’s been untouched , shaped by nature and preserved for all to see.
Once you have sat there and taking it all in…make your way down to the town of Regua. You can walk through the narrow streets, talks to the locals and of course, try some Port Wine! We had lunch at the one restaurant that was open in the bottom of the river and just relaxed , and enjoyed the breathtaking view.
If you don’t have a car, there are small cruises that will take you from Porto through the Douro River and I think there are also bus rides. But please, don’t leave Porto without checking this place out! You will be glad you did.
